On The Deals Shaping Our Economy

Good morning. Ika here. An extraordinary weekend. Here’s what you need to know.

Trump’s Fast-Tracked War

President Trump says the US-Israel military operation against Iran is moving "substantially ahead" of schedule.

By the numbers: The US military reports hitting over 1,250 targets in the first 48 hours.

"President Trump has all the latitude in the world to talk about how long it may or may not take - four weeks, two weeks, six weeks. It could move up. It could move back"

Pete Hegseth, Defense Secretary

The other side: Iran is playing a calculated long game, deploying a drizzle of older, cheaper missiles to exhaust expensive US and Israeli interceptor stockpiles before using their advanced solid-fuel weapons.

"Who said the Iranians will play by our rules? We don't know where the Iranians will take it... but this [war] will likely not be measured in hours or days."

✈️ Chaos and Market Shocks

The fallout: The conflict has triggered travel disruptions across the Gulf, with over 11,000 flights cancelled since Saturday.

Dubai expats are driving to Oman and Saudi Arabia to catch charter flights out of the region.

Market impact: Brent crude surged 6.7% and Qatar halted its liquefied natural gas production following a drone strike on its facilities.

  • Investors are fleeing to gold, pushing it near record highs, while dumping government bonds due to fears of an inflation shock.

  • Emerging markets are also feeling the heat as the US dollar strengthens.

☢️ France’s Nuclear Umbrella

The shift: French President Emmanuel Macron is offering to temporarily deploy parts of France's nuclear deterrent to allied European nations for the first time.

Why it matters: It is a major strategic pivot dubbed "forward deterrence," driven by the war in Ukraine and growing European anxieties about US defense commitments. The plan would allow allies like Germany and Poland to participate in French nuclear exercises.

"This is genuine strategic convergence between our countries [aimed] at giving real depth to the defence of our continent"

🇿🇦 Local Politics: ANC Rebukes Motsepe Bid

Driving the news: The ANC is shutting down early attempts to position billionaire Patrice Motsepe as a 2027 presidential candidate to replace Cyril Ramaphosa.

"The ANC therefore unequivocally condemns 'the PM27' campaign and calls on all those involved to desist immediately."

ANC Announcement

The bottom line: The party wants strict focus on the upcoming local government elections, calling parallel leadership campaigns right now "divisive" and a distraction from core service delivery work.

⚖️ FSCA Drops Hammer on Steinhoff Executive

The Financial Sector Conduct Authority is demanding over R350 million from former Steinhoff executive Stephanus Grobler for his role in the company's corporate fraud.

The details: The FSCA found the 2014-2016 financial statements presented to the market were "false, misleading, or deceptive".

On top of the FSCA penalty, Steinhoff entities are demanding Grobler pay back nearly R300 million in salaries, bonuses, and incentives.
